Aristotle with A Bust of Homer by Rembrandt

In his Aristotle with a Bust of Homer, from 1653, Rembrandt was granted the ability to paint any philosopher. Characterized by dramatic lighting, Rembrandt decided to capture Aristotle in a state of contemplation as he studies a bust of the poet Homer. Having gone through periods of financial hardship, Rembrandt used this painting as a vehicle to convey his thoughts on worldly possessions and eternal fame. Ironically, the Met acquired this painting in 1961 for a sum of $2.3 million, the highest price ever paid for a painting at that time.
