Young Woman Holding A Water Jug by Vermeer

Vermeer’s Young Woman Holding A Water Jug (1662) is the quintessential example of genre painting of the interior for the artist. He concentrates the scene on a frozen moment in the day-to-day life a lone figure, a young woman bathed in sunlight streaming in from a window on the left-hand side of the room. The objects in the room exhibit the artist’s excellent skill in rendering still-life elements and indicates the wealth of both this woman and the Dutch Republic in the 17th century.
