Venus and Adonis by Rubens

Rubens’ Venus and Adonis (mid 1630s) builds upon and places itself in dialogue with the precedent of Titian in the depiction of the mythological figures. This depiction departs from the story of Ovid to feature a dramatic scene of leave-taking between the lovers. The choice of moment and composition gives the defining theatricality of the painting as in accordance with the Baroque style.
